Advocacy:  Why We Continue to Fight

Siouxland Stroke Support Network

This is our pride and joy.  This group was needed and it is growing to be one of the best things in our life.  We noticed that Siouxland was missing a place where stroke survivors and their loved ones could get together to laugh, cry, and work together to make life a little bit easier.  Thanks to an amazing group of people who take time out their busy schedule to join us.  Our group meets the second Saturday of each month at Mercy Medical in Sioux City, but we are always available to lend an ear if you just need to talk.

Stroke Survivor Legislation

We are currently part of a growing group of people who are standing up for stroke survivors in the state of Iowa by attempting to pass legislation to finally ask for a stroke to be considered a reportable injury.  At this time when a person suffering from a stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA) is hospitalized, they are not always categorized as actually having a stroke.  This causes many problems down the road when it comes to filing paperwork for social security disability, receiving continuing out-patient care, and many other situations. Our goal is to ease the burden and help a person receive the best care possible so they can get back faster to what they love to do.  If you are interested in researching these bills, please visit: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/ and search for the House bill (HF 274) and the Senate Bill (SSB 1147).    UPDATE:  GOOD NEWS!  Our bill passes unanimously in the House and the Senate.  It goes in effect in July of 2017.  Check our blog for more information.
